Philosophy in the Flesh
Science and philosophy, at least in modern times, are separate disciplines. But one informs the other. Lakoff and Johnson, in this book, send a reminder for us not to forget that.

In Philosophy in the Flesh by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson we are warned not to divorce science from philosophy. Focusing on how cognitive science has reopened central philosophical questions, they write:

Who are we?

The mind is inherently embodied.

Thought is mostly unconscious.

Abstract concepts are largely metaphorical.

These are three major findings of cognitive science. More than two millennia of a priori philosophical speculation about these aspects of reason are over. Because of these discoveries, philosophy can never be the same again.

Who are we? I’m almost too terrified to find out.
